Wild horses are a symbol of American Heritage. More than that they represent freedom, indigenous history, and our wild spirit. Our wild is who we are at our core. The Bureau of Land Management has been using their Adoption Incentive Program established since 2019, as a way to launder wild horses for slaughter. Each year approximately 3500 wild horses are rounded up using helicopters and stored in a holding system (funded by taxpayers). Horses are then put up for adoption giving adopters $1000 per horse. The adoption process isn't selective about adopters, many horses going to kill houses, being neglected and abused prior to their slaughter.
In 1971 Congress passed the "Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act" to protect these beautiful creatures as "symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West". The only other species to receive federal protection is the American Bald Eagle.
Wild horses and burros can be found roaming across California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana.
These beautiful animals desperately need your help. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-California, on Thursday called for the BLM to suspend its Adoption Incentive Program following the New York Times article that wild horses being adopted through the program are being slaughtered.
Help Us Take Action: Send a letter to Congress demanding that the program be suspended to improve the adoption process and to put an end to horse slaughtering for good.
